Texarkana’s Location in Two States Makes It “Twice as Nice”
If you experience twice as much excitement when you visit Texarkana, it’s because the city actually consists of two cities in two different states. Texarkana’s location in the southwest corner of Arkansas and the northwest corner of Texas makes it easy to visit attractions in both states just by taking a few steps. Called “Twice as Nice” by locals, the town has two city governments, city mayors, fire departments and police departments, not to mention twice as many attractions.
According to legend, Colonel Gus Knobel, a railroad surveyor, was planning the Iron Mountain Railroad right-of-way out of Little Rock. When he arrived at the state line, he nailed a board to a tree that read “Tex-Ark-Ana.” He believed a city would one day be built there, and had decided to be the one to name it. Knobel created the name by combining the names of Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. He included Louisiana because he mistakenly believed the Louisiana boundary was only a few miles away. Although the city bordered two states, not three, the name stuck.
Texarkana’s diverse and thriving economy relies on the manufacturing, agriculture, medicine, transportation, education, retail and small business industries, which support 19 counties in four different states. Experience the local arts scene with live theater, outdoor art installations and six museums. The combination of a temperate climate and abundant shopping, dining and entertainment makes Texarkana a great place to live or visit.
Stay in the comfortable accommodations at the Country Inn & Suites, Texarkana while you sightsee or attend meetings in the area.
